Retirement Letter for Mr. Olivero 5.6.21

Dear Students, Parents and Community Members,

Some of you may be aware that four years ago I announced I would be retiring with the graduating Class of 2021.  True to my word, this is happening.  My last official day as Principal of University City High School will be July 1, 2021.  With this date in mind, I’ve asked the school district to start the selection process for the next principal so that one can be ready and in place by July 2nd.    

In my 36 years as a coach, teacher, athletic director, vice principal, school improvement officer, and principal, I have worked in 9 different schools.  Eleven of the last 36 years have been at UCHS. Looking back over the years, I thank God for the amazing school leaders that gave me an opportunity to serve.  I have been blessed to have worked with so many amazing educators and supportive parents and community members. I was able to work alongside and witness the very best the public educational system has to offer.  Collectively, these efforts were inspiring!  I have always said that the true measure of our success is not necessarily weighed in what is achieved by students during their K-12 experience, but measured by what kind of people they become in their 30’s and 40’s, and beyond.  Being more senior in age, I have been graced by the opportunity to witness these successes firsthand.  Although I am still waiting on the first student to win the Nobel Peace Prize, I am sure this day is coming.    

What will I miss most? I will miss the students. Each day they bring energy and life that makes education the greatest profession in the world.  I will truly miss seeing our students at pep rallies, music concerts, plays, and athletic events.  Nothing is better than hearing our student body shouting, “UC U-know!”  This memory will always be etched in my mind - followed by my hands wanting to clap it up!   

I will still be leading over the next two months, but felt I needed to get this notice out to our school community as the search will soon begin for UCHS’ next school leader.
