School Update (02-23-2021)

Good Afternoon Centurions,

If you haven’t heard, earlier today, information went out to local media outlets regarding a reopening date of April 5/12 depending on what article you read. The district also released information to the press.  See the following link to the Press release.  This is indeed encouraging information.

At the UC Cluster meeting yesterday, new Board Member Sabrino Bazzo shared there were internal conversations taking place regarding next steps for a Phase II School Opening Pan.  Today, it was announced the overview of these plans.  Here is Tentative Agreement reached:  SDEA TA.  As you can see from the agreement, there are still more details that need to be determined for what school will look like in a Phase II opening.  The plan is focused on our county tier level needing to drop into “red,” and the ability for district staff to be vaccinated. These are in addition to making sure the schools are following health and safety guidelines established with UCSD.

There will be a continued level bargaining with all labor groups regarding the specifics.  For example, some questions that need to be answered: are we cohorting students? How many students will be allowed in a classroom at any one time? How many days a week will students come to school? Is Friday going to be completely asynchronous? Etc.

So much of the April return date hinges on the ability for school staff to get their vaccinations. Currently the district is hopeful staff will be able to get theirs starting after March 1st.  While this is a target date, it is still not clear when the vaccinations will start for San Diego Unified School District staff.  As most of you know, depending on the type of vaccine a person gets, it can take another month or more for the vaccines to reach their full capability.  Please know the district is working to get students back to campus and are committed to doing it safely.  In these plans, students will still be permitted to stay home to take their courses online.

There are so many items which we will need to be figured out over the next few weeks.  As I have more details, I will be in communication with staff, parents, and students.
