UCHS School Update (11-02-2020)

Dear UCHS Families,

On October 13, 2020, our Board of Education adopted a standards-based grading policy. The implementation of this will be a gradual process in order to align our school site policies to the revised grading policy. For this school year, educators are being asked to focus on the following key elements:

  1. Removing nonacademic factors from the academic grade

  2. Providing opportunities for revision and reassessment

Over the next week, UCHS teachers will communicate with families the type, frequency, and timeframe for revisions and reassessments. Soon, UCHS will publish a Question and Answer (Q & A) guide as to how the school will proceed with the new BOE guidelines for items 1 and 2 listed above.

When the UCHS policy is published, we will be working with our School Site Governance Team (SSGT) to flush out any additional changes or adjustments needed in the policy. Everyone should know in advance, the policy is being adjusted to make sure students that are not doing well have opportunities for retakes and revisions in all classes.

Starting next school year (2021/2022) teachers will provide standards-based feedback and comments to indicate progress towards mastery of standards.  Citizenship marks on grade reports will align to revised grading policy language.  Also starting next year teachers will begin to use proficiency scales and/or standards-aligned rubrics in order to clearly communicate a student’s current level. Emphasis will be placed on progress towards mastery and NOT accumulation of points. I will continue to share additional information regarding these changes as it becomes available.

Shifting gears, this week is College Week. On Thursday, November 5th, at 5 pm, the counseling team will host their annual senior college/financial aid night via zoom. They will have a representative from SDSU, UCSD, Community College, and a person there to explain the financial aid process. The zoom invite address for this event has already been sent out to seniors via their school counselors.

The district will also be hosting virtual college fairs this week for Historic Black College Universities (HBCU) College Fair and Hispanic College Fair.

Have a great start of the new semester.    Mr. O.
