UCHS School Update (10-08-2020)
Hello UCHS students and parents,
I want to share that we are more than halfway through the first semester for students and their first three classes. The last day for the first three classes will be Friday, October 30th. On Monday, November 2nd, we will start the first semester classes for students in periods four, five and six.
The grades students have earned for the first progress reporting period are now posted in PowerSchool. We will not be mailing out report cards. If you do not have a parent PowerSchool account already set up, which is about 24% of you, please contact our Site Tech at [email protected] to set up a parent/guardian account for your student. You can log in to PowerSchool here.
Teachers were given the option to either use Google Classroom or Canvas as their learning platform. Each of these platforms have their benefits and drawbacks. We do want parents monitoring their student’s daily attendance and work assignments/grades being completed for classes. The fastest way to do this is through the use of Power School. A more detailed way to track what is happening in your student’s classes, is to have your student take you on a tour of their virtual classrooms. If a teacher is using Canvas, a parent will be able to see their student’s assignments via the dashboard. If the teacher is using Google Classroom, a parent will be able to see their student’s work via the stream.
As you know, SDSUD continues to serve students meals at locations throughout the city of San Diego. In addition to providing a lunch to students M-F, students are able to take home a bag of groceries as well. Please use this link for food locations.
As mentioned at the start of the year in the PTSA meeting, this year SDUSD and UCHS will be taking a focused look at policies and practices that may inadvertently favor one group of students and parents over others. While some long standing policies may have become the common way of doing school business, such practices can also cause an uneven playing field that then contributes to an unfair education system for our students and families. We also want to take a focused look at our known and unknown biases that can contribute to prejudging students, parents and staff. In an effort to do a school study, we are forming equity teams for the school. There will be one for students, staff and parents. We will hold our first parent meeting on Thursday, October 22nd at 7 pm. I want to strongly encourage our African American and Hispanic parents to participate as we want and need to hear your voice and your experiences. We will plan to have Spanish translation available. Please email me if interested at [email protected].
Last, although elementary schools are starting back for some students next week, this is not the case for high school aged students in SDUSD. When we get more information as to when we might start a phased in process, we will let you know.
Thank you, Mr. O.
